Less ecology minded, but no less popular, is sports fishing. Kosrae's wealth
of marine life includes a wide variety of sports fish including marlin, tuna,
wahoo and mahi. There are no commercial fishing operations on Kosrae and no sports
fishing boats. Visitors need to bring their own gear or fish local style, which
can be very exciting. Local lore has it that marlin as big as 200 lbs have been
caught on hand lines.
DIVING: Kosrae is known for its virgin reefs, hard corals and pristine
waters with visibility up to 150 feet or more and thriving hard coral society.
There are more than 172 species of hard corals and 10 species of soft corals,
over 250 species of fish and marine life, resident bottleneck dolphins, reef
sharks, barracuda, eagle rays, seasonal oceanic turtles and the occasional whale.
There are several beach entry points as well as easy boat access to the reefs
and lagoons. More than 50 dive sites have been established. Each site marked
with a buoy to prevent improper anchoring and to protect the coral below. Three
natural harbors offer the wrecks of two whaling ships, Henrietta and Waverly,
two WWII wrecks, Sansun Maru and Keikyu Maru, two aircraft, the pirate ship
of the infamous Bully Hayes and, legend has it, his buried treasure.
DIVE SITES:
Eagle's Nest: Eagle rays come in squadron formation to feed at this
barrier reef site in 20 to 130 feet of water. They can usually be found around

turtles and napoleon wrasse. The boat ride to the site is almost as beautiful
as the dive passing by pristine beaches, rugged coastline and mangrove forests.

continues down to 120 feet. You may encounter schools of impressive broomtail
filefish, eagle rays and a good variety of invertebrates including anemones,

with pelagics. Sharks, schooling eagle rays, rainbow runners and barracudas
