Major Attractions on the Island of Saipan:
Bird Island: Bird Island got its name because of its use by sea birds as a nesting ground. It is a raised limestone outcrop with minimal yet sufficient vegetation to support the nesting requirements of the birds that frequent it.
Managaha lsland: Managaha is a small islet situated in the Saipan's lagoon. A short boat ride takes you there for sun and fun on the white sand beach. Walking the island by foot takes about 20-30 minutes. It is known as either the "Pearl of Saipan" or "Warship Island" because it was once a garrison for the Japanese army during World War II.
Blue Grotto: Blue Grotto is a natural limestone cave, which opens out into the deep sapphire waters of the Pacific. It looks like a big whale with its mouth agape. The arched ceiling ceiling features eroding stalactites that have withstood millennia after millennia of wave action. The pool inside the cave yields passage to another two caves underwater that connect to the ocean. Colorful coral formations and the azure waters entice the palate of any diver.
Banzai Cliff: Banzai Cliff is located on the northernmost tip of Saipan. Towards the end of the Battle for Saipan, Japanese soldiers and civilians elected to take their own lives rather than surrender to American forces. As they jumped to the rocks and sea below, they cried 'Banzai' in tribute to the longevity of the emperor and the empire of Japan.
Sugar King Park: During the Japanese period (1914 - 1944), the economic driving force was the sugar industry. Haruji Matsue was responsible for the development and success of this industry. As a tribute to his efforts, a monument in his honor was erected by his fellow countrymen in 1936 in what is now 'Sugar King Park' in Garapan.
Korean Peace Memorial: The memorial is situated within the Marpi Point area at the northern end of Saipan. It was built by the Commemoration Council for the Deceased Koreans and dedicated in 1981 in honor of the Korean women that were drafted by the Japanese government and forced into servitude to the Japanese military. Many of the women died without any form of compensation.
Last Command Post: The Last Japanese Command Post is found next to the Korean Peace Memorial. The post was built using a natural cave on a steep cliff of Mt. Marpi. This site possesses war relics of military guns, torpedoes and tanks.
